Nigerian job seekers, exam candidates turn to the Internet

Excerpts from ww2.guardiannewsngr.com

ACCORDING to findings from Google Zeitgeist – a tool that provides insights into global, regional, past and present search trends – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has topped the list of fastest ris
ing searches in Nigeria over the past month, with West African Examinations Council (WAEC) coming in second, as anxious students check their results.

The English Premier League is ninth on the list, as the new season kicks off and football fans flock to the web in search of the latest fixtures and scores.

The NDLEA tops the list because its ongoing e-recruitment exercise is generating a lot of interest. According to the agency, the entire recruitment process will be carried out online on its website.

WAEC has just released the results of the recently concluded May/June 2010 examination online. The 1.35 million candidates that sat for the examinations are clearly making use of the Internet’s convenience as they check their grades online.

Commenting on the August result, Lola Masha of Google Nigeria, said, “It’s great to see public bodies like the WAEC providing exam results online and recruitment exercises of other agencies taking place on the web. The sheer number of searches on both topics demonstrate the great demand for online resources in Nigeria.”

Massive investment in ICT infrastructure in recent times has ensured that Nigerians are gradually closing the technology gap; they are beginning to enjoy increasing access to technology, and making use of search engines such as Google.

Need for Struggling Nigerian Businesses to Consolidate

Like life itself, nothing stays permanent. Same theory goes for business too. Since the 2007 economic downturn, we have seen companies profit nose dive or disappear. Big and small businesses alike were not spared at all. We have heard and seen the reports of strong and weak banks. We are also witnesses to the rapid loss of relevance of the CDMA telecommunication companies due to the unfair competitive advantage the Gsm companies have over them. Even these big Gsm companies have also reported a drop in their profits. On and on the same tale goes on everywhere. It is time struggling businesses come down from their high horse and discuss how to consolidate with their peers in order to face the economic storm with more weight and resources. Otherwise they could just be counting their last days.

25% Of Malware Spread Via USB Drives

Email and peer-to-peer networks also rank as significant venues for malware attacks, which have increased slightly in the U.S. but declined in Europe, according to Panda Security.

Excerpts from www.InformationWeek.com

Forget the firewall. About 25% of malware today is designed to spread via USB storage devices that connect directly to PCs. The number comes from Panda Security, which recently surveyed 10,470 small and midsize companies -- those having up to 1,000 computers -- in 20 countries. Roughly half said that their organization had been infected by malware at least once in the previous year, and in the United States, 27% said the origin was a USB device.
"Much of the malware in circulation has been designed to distribute through these devices," said Luis Corrons, technical director of PandaLabs. "Not only does it copy itself to these gadgets, but it also runs automatically when a USB device is connected to a computer, infecting the system practically transparently to the user. This has been the case with many infections we have seen this year, such as the distribution of the Mariposa and Vodafone botnets."

Comparatively speaking, Panda found that 21% of malware originated via email and 14% from downloads or peer-to-peer networks. Infection-wise, the report also found that in the United States, the number of organizations reporting a malware infection over the past year increased slightly from 2009 to 2010, from 44% to 46%. In Europe in the same timeframe, however, infections declined from 58% to 49%.
Viruses are still the most seen type of malware, accounting for an average of 45% of the malicious code that makes its way inside the network. Spyware, meanwhile, accounts for 23%. According to the report, however, 13% of small and midsize businesses don't have any security systems in place, with 57% of them saying their organization didn't regard security as a priority. For companies with security in place, they overwhelmingly (97%) do use antivirus software, with about one-third using free antivirus software aimed at home users.

How Nigerian SMES can compete with Big Companies to win Consumers Attention

All businesses need to advertise their goods and services from time to time in other to win and retain more customers. Apart from one on one field marketing, SMES face huge challenges in utilizing other forms of media such as; the print, radio and television due to the exorbitant cost of these services. But atlas thanks to the advent of the internet. Millions of potential customers are always online at any point in time and the cost of reaching these numerous people is quite cheap depending on your budget.

To get started small businesses would need an interactive website that people could visit, comment and get informed about their services and contact details. Sites like Google ,Yahoo and Facebook also offer advertisement services in which you pay a little fee to get your adverts to a large category of people.

The cost of building a website varies depending on the complexity of the design and/or the experience of the web designer. With a budget of N10,000 to N20,000 any business website could be up and running and driving in sales you would never have taught possible.
