ACCORDING to findings from Google Zeitgeist – a tool that provides insights into global, regional, past and present search trends – The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has topped the list of fastest rising searches in Nigeria over the past month, with West African Examinations Council (WAEC) coming in second, as anxious students check their results.
The English Premier League is ninth on the list, as the new season kicks off and football fans flock to the web in search of the latest fixtures and scores.
The NDLEA tops the list because its ongoing e-recruitment exercise is generating a lot of interest. According to the agency, the entire recruitment process will be carried out online on its website.
WAEC has just released the results of the recently concluded May/June 2010 examination online. The 1.35 million candidates that sat for the examinations are clearly making use of the Internet’s convenience as they check their grades online.
Commenting on the August result, Lola Masha of Google Nigeria, said, “It’s great to see public bodies like the WAEC providing exam results online and recruitment exercises of other agencies taking place on the web. The sheer number of searches on both topics demonstrate the great demand for online resources in Nigeria.”
Massive investment in ICT infrastructure in recent times has ensured that Nigerians are gradually closing the technology gap; they are beginning to enjoy increasing access to technology, and making use of search engines such as Google.
